Im doing the Bonnie K. Hunter "Easy St." mystery quilt!

I wanted to add this link to the post -- visit the Bonnies' website where there is a big section dedicated to people doing this mystery quilt. QuiltVille

I just pulled the fabrics today -

Here are the fabrics Im going to use.

I did not think I was going to have enough prints of each of the colors -- and Im still not sure I like my tones of grey -- they are very close to the whites -- and I dont think thats the goal.

But, for today Im done picking fabrics.

Im working on other projects now. Posts to follow.

  1. Is that a real, working princess phone??!

  2. Does it have a fancy name like that? Its only a "Land Line" to me -- I am so behind the times. I used to love smart phones and all that.. Not so much anymore. I like to turn off the ringer and sit in solitude! Not even a answering machine in this place!

  3. You have plenty of lovely fabrics!! Ok is the grey with the stripe your Grey for this one?

I see a white with a stripe that would look Fab together, then there is a white with maybe birdhouses on it? Seriously, once cut up they won't look so busy!! I know I cut dog/cat faces on white up thinking it would be TOO too much -- but not in tiny piece they were not :-)

Then there is sorta a white with Big Tan leaves on it, if you fussy cut to get most of the white (but I'd leave a tip or two of the brown leaf too).. there is another one --

Someone posted you only need 19 strips WOF of each -- I wound up using 3 white/black prints (or was it 4)... sewn and ironed but now must cut and sew back into those blocks wheeee

  5. Hey Dee Cee - Thank you for looking at the grey's with me. I put some of each away and got more "Whites" for the "white and black" she uses - and am planning to use more of the darker more solid looking greys for the grey. I think there will be enough prints in the rest of the quilt that some solids wont hurt. It sounds like your pretty far into the first part of it. I need to finish quilting this quilt Im working on. I need to mail it out tomorrow. Im almost done - I did not plan on taking a few hours off to pick fabrics and watch Bonnie sew this afternoon. But, Maybe I need a nap first?

  6. Think of the grey as a "shadow". My own grey is not that dark either, I think you can see that in my pictures :) It doesn't need to contrast greatly or knock anyone's socks off ---but it's okay if it does that too! That's the beauty of a mystery!

  8. I also can sew late into the night - and take a nap when I want- at least till School starts again in January. I saw that post from Bonnie and got intimidated! I just got one of her books and am trying to make a quilt from her website and the mystery quilt -- I feel like the new internet fan. Thanks for the tip on the grey's also. I think what I have will work just fine. We will see -- !Ive loved recycled quilting from day one - and really cant make another gees bend inspired quilt. I love them - but, am ready to mess up new things! Thank you both for the comments.

  9. pfffftt! No intimidation allowed! It's all just FUN and it will be great whatever you choose!

I don't design by "value" really -- I design by color family ---different, I know, but the value happens in the variety of fabrics I use -- for instance, all my purples are not the same shade of purple...they go from medium to dark..so there is value there. If you stick with your color families you will be fine!

  10. Wow now that will really turn into a scrap quilt - I will need some more years to assemble such a pile of scraps

  11. I am lucky to have a few quilters in my family and a 87 y.o. Grandmother who has been hoarding fabric all her life and has never had to move. I have also put out calls on my facebook page that I am looking for fabrics to sew with - lots of people bring me their goodwill clothes. I take what I want and drop the rest off. I also shop the secondhand shops for fabrics and stuff - used sheets and blankets are great. I just started going to the fabric shops again -- I have learned that 1/4 or half a yard of fabric is not so expensive and adds a nice mix to the used fabric blends. I am willing to sew with pretty much anything - so the blends that I get from my Grandmother make it look like my stash is 50 years in the making. Its not - Ive only been sewing 2 years this Christmas.
