Fresh applique

Image
Hello - !  Ive been doing various forms of raw edge applique for years. I loved using the "hover foot" on the Viking machines Ive had to do gorgeous blanket stitches around shapes.  I also use a straight stitch machine to do straight stitching around shapes.  Ive posted a youtube video I made about the following quilt. The video below is just me talking.    The applique above is raw edge with machine embroidery designs and free motion quilting.  I love raw edge applique. I do not do any hand work, or turned edge applique. All the best to you.  Taffy.

Quilt dress turned into a quilt!

Image
I looked around and found a few more pics of drag dress turned into quilt -- Its really easy - I think the trick is to imagine there being no possible way to mess it up. And, let yourself love your work. I have a tip -- "If your friends are giving you unsolicited critique's ask them if they are "really happy at their job and relationship" -- I hate people acting like they are the decorator or they are a judge on some tv show whenever they see things? Here are some pics -- enjoy. I love them. Notice how the dress becomes a quilt? Yeah -- I like that.

Scarf -- made from recycled scrap fabric.

I love wearing scarf's - I am fat and my core stays pretty warm under a light coat and if I add a scarf .. Im a perfect temperature. Here are some pics - all text is for the pic under it - This one is some strips of yellow and pink with batting - All of those smaller pieces are pieced - and are leftover from a scrap border I made. This one is like a quilt - pieced with no raw edges - This one is applique - But also built like a quilt - front/back + batting and binding - This one is some flip and sew and some raw edge applique - joined inside out like a pillow - Just a few more ways to use up scraps.

Twin quilts for kids -

My house turns into a real mess when I pull fabrics for new projects. I like to pull as many as I think I like for what I have in mind --- I pull WAY too many. And then, when I start cutting I start weeding out the ones I like.  I made this quilt for a friend who has a son who needs a warm heavy blanket for the Maine winters. She wanted a old looking quilt but one that also was a boy quilt. Dog. My friend also wanted a "girl" quilt - I have an idea to put bright green/pink or purple circles in some of those squares but - I had to send a note to mamma to see about going that wild. Here are the pieces of the "boy quilt" in a pile -

I finished the baby blankets -

I had some leftover blocks from a quilt - perfect to make a small quilt with. These squares were left overs from a half square triangles quilt I made. Again, these are more left over blocks. I love the edges of this quilt because its polyester velvet - the same fabric is on the back. The purple squares are corduroy. Im working on making some more quilts that are made from 100% recycled fabrics. I love sewing with recycled fabric and have learned more about how to pick out a variety of everything to make looks that I like. I really want to make some new quilts that are my own patterns. While I quilt my own way and use my own fabrics - I use those things to put my stamp on older more traditional patterns. I feel like those are my own. But, its picking elements from quilts and putting them together - I dont know if I feel like that is creating something new.

Cutting Pieces!

Image
The stack of cut up jeans is huge. I have another commission for a denim tumbling blocks quilt! I loved making the other one - I hope I learned some things from making the other one. Like how to sew together the seams in the center of each of the blocks from the inside and not sewing them together with the quilting after. Also - I have a few bags of the same size diamonds left over from the star quilt I made - the diamond shape is the same for both quilts - just the block assembly is different - and this other quilt I want to make is yet another way to assemble the same one piece. It will be cut up fabrics and khaki.

Woah!

I quilted so hard the last few weeks - I was brain dead for most of the day. Then, I got this wild idea to make a tree skirt from leftovers -- Then, All of a sudden my table looked like this - ! And, I was making these Now - its way past bedtime and Ive got a serious messy house on my hands. But, honestly - that pile of fabric, soda, my pics of my pets - a sewing machine set up with fabrics and an iron in reach --- and a computer -- Im all set if this is heaven!

How did that quilt?

Image
The fleece quilted fine - no problems.  Ill wash it and let you know how it goes.  I woke up George and took a pic of him. Of course now he thinks he needs to go outside.  Those recycled tee shirt quilt go together well - I really love dots. Quilters dont like the way they finish because they ripple LOTS! Its frustrating to me, too --- but, after they get washed they get so comfortable the ripples dont show up the way they do on pieces quilts.

One project finished!

There are so many pieces in this quilt top - I really do like it. After it was finished I was pretty torn about the border - I really did not like that it did not finish flat. Then, I slept on it and decided it was fine. I did trade a quilt for a new accuquilt - it is really cool to be able to cut quilts pieces evenly. Today I have been cutting pieces all day. I think the pieces for the next quilt are all cut.

Another real beauty! Barn raising pattern --

I worked this pattern out -- doing light and dark. Ive not been that good at doing the whole quilt thing of light and dark -- but, this quilt really shows it off.

Modern quilt ---

So many of the Modern Quilts" I see are a size that I cant figure out what in hell they would be used for? Yet, the guild claims to make utility quilts? I see lap size quilt after lap size quilt come out of that group.... what is a 30 yo doing with 75 lap quilts in they house?   All those words do not take anything away from the quilts ... but - I dont see them as utility. I see them as decorative.   I love so many of the quilts I see that are called modern. I love them.   I need more than off center things and color blocks to call projects modern, though.   I need the products to use recycled fabrics. I cant have consumption and the prohibitive cost of new materials keeping the poor out of anything that calls itself modern.   Modern MUST include recycled goods and access to anyone who wants to join.
