Working on a new quilt --

Image
Im Finally quilting again - I want to make another quilt using a pattern I tried a few quilts ago. We will see if the new quilt has the same presence as the other one. Maybe its workable pattern?

Strip quilt -

Image
I love this style quilt - I have so much fabric in my house that needs to get sewn that Ima go nuts for this style for a bit. I already have the pieces cut for the next one. Here is a larger pic - but, taken with a flash so there is a bit of wash-out. The size of this quilt is a  generous Queen - it will have about a 10 inch drop on each side and the bottom. I had not used lots of prints in my other quilts - I need more pratice on how to use a mix of solid, print and graded colors. I really like the solid color quilts I make - but, I love prints and want to use more of them.

Gay Pride --

Image
I had too much fun during Portland Pride this year. I worked hard to try to help other people have fun - and I went to new events to see what my friends were bringing out to the party!

Pillow Talk

Image
I had some circles leftover from the last quilt and decided to try to make a pillow... I added some couched yarn to it.

Finished ugly quilt --

Image
It turned out very nice! Im in love with it. Its HUGE - king size. I free Motion Quilted the whole quilt. I had to work hard doing the Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) for some reason the thread kept messing up. I kept working, though.  See how an ugly quilt got pretty at the end? Everyone wont like my thing and will still think the quilt is gross - but, I like it. I love it.

Ive been busy!

Image
Last week it was HOT! I cleaned out the garden and took some quilts outside to see them in the light of day. I love the way they look on the side of this fence.

raw edge applique (zig zag stitch)

Image
here is a little tutorial on raw edge applique. the drag queen quilter at work. i love applique - raw edge applique - that is. i have made projects using a zig zag stitch and straight stitch and blanket stitches. ive done small one one piece appliques with a satin straight stitch (also called a button stitch) ill make more videos with more information - but, any how here is a pic of the finished product. i free motion quilted the blocks. again 100% recycled fabrics - these ones were ALL pulled from my scrap bag.

my first quilt

Image
i started sewing in december 2011. i wanted to sew clothes. i thought quilting was for old anal ladies. then, i made some crap clothes - that were better than i expected them to b. i decided i wanted to try to make a crazy quilt. i found a "flip and sew" way to make some crazy looking quilt blocks. i made a bunch of blocks and decided to sew them together - it turned out that my first quilt was a perfect size for a shower curtain. if you are up to date on new fabrics, youll see some new fabrics in there. i hated working with new fabric. i love fabric. but, the new stuff just feels like it has too much earth impact and too much abuse for the workers. so, i started to use used fabrics. anyhow - look at all of the different shapes in there. lots of the shapes here are straight lines and blocks. not really a crazy quilt ... but, my idea of a crazy quilt was...  any fabric / odd shapes. i used a foundation piece and sewed all the pieces on top  what does that me...

table cloth quilt

Image
the table cloth quilt made it to its new home. this is all made with applique and scraps. the batting is my radical recycled batting and the back is some thick old polyester i found. there is free motion quiting in every block - the straight stitch machine did all of the work with no problems. a standard domestic could not have done some of the thickness.

scarf variations

quilted scarf

i love warm scarves! i wear them whenever i can get away with it - they are warm! im pretty sweaty so i cant wear them all the time. dont be afraid to cut up a tee shirt and make an applique scarf!

no pins!

Image
i dont use pins. i think they are a waste of time. i dont use them to piece and i dont use them when i quilt. everything will work out fine - just sew! i dont like tucks - but i dont beat myself up if i have tucks .. finish quilts! thats the point.

radical recycled quilt batting

i use everything fabric in my quilts. my neighbor tossed a giant bag of used painting clothes on the sidewalk last summer. i brought the whole bag up here and boxed it up for "later." I loved the textures of the paint. but had no sewing skills and did not want to mess up the fabric. this is a blog about how I used the heavy sweaters, and sweat-material as batting. here are a few pics... i just cut up the material at the seams and lay one piece in at a time. i dont pin my quilts to quilt them. i HATE pins. its easy to lay in some thick fabric - sew over it - then lay in more.. repeat, repeat. after putting the layer of "batting" inside the quilt - flop the top back over and quilt away. with enough stitching - or tight enough channeled quilting those inside pieces are not going anywhere. i sometimes use scraps as batting also - i dont worry about making a flat inside because i like lumpy quilts. i dont try to have a perfect coverage either. i jus...
