This is how it started ..

I saw a quilt I liked that was made like this -- So - I cut up a pile of pieces and made my own -- I did not have a pattern - but, I think everything is OK.                               I really like the way it turned out -- I dont know that I have ever used white b-4 as a background. Well, I have made a few Red and white quilts -- I guess i have .. but, I like this one. We will see how I finish it. Most of these fabrics are commercial quilting fabrics that were given to me as scraps from my Aunt who is a quilter. I used a cool process that I saw on a jenny doan youtube video - I used 10 inch squares - sewn together at 1/4 inch all around the outside -- (right sides together) then cut them all into an *X* -- magic = 4 half square finished triangles. The cutting took longer than anything else...

once in a blue moon quilt -

Image
Well, I made this. Yes, I did add another side with orange/yellow blocks. I am deciding I might need to make some full size quilts -- too many huge quilts. IDK if people in the city have huge beds?

Fabric batting...

Image
This is the front of the quilt - after I added the edges. This is a view of the back -- Close up of the fabric on the back. Well, I used up some fabric thinking it might be strong enough to be the back of a quilt. I thought a light weight quilt would be perfect .. but, Ive decided the backing isnt strong enough for constant use. So, Im going to put another back on the quilt and the current backing will become the batting. This fabric is a sort of waffle fabric that would be great as shower curtains or window curtains -- but doe snot seem strong enough for daily use.

More lines .... miles of lines.

Ive been going crazy for strip quilts - I have so much fabric here at the house. This process is a great way to use up smaller pieces and HIDE some uglies. When I first started quilting I was buying new fabrics - Im trying to get all of those used up also. I have let my collecting fabric totally take over my little house. Im feeling like its too much and I want some of my space back. Ive been feeling a little down - I am going through some stuff and the end of the summer is a sad few weeks for me. Of course, the Drag Queen Quilter has real (REAL) long man nails. I have no idea why I love long fingernails. I just do. I used to chew and eat the sides of my fingers till they would bleed and be infected. Its was gross. So, now that I quilt and have to look at my hands all the time I like to have them (sorta) nice looking. I also let them get gross and unpainted - but keep them pretty long. I signed up for classes today - I think this is the last year of working o...

Quilting ..

Image
Ive been working on new things.. new patterns, new free motion quilting patterns -- its hard work to try new thuings. Its moving pretty slow. I miss my dog. George and I are doing pretty good even with everything going on.

Progress?

Well, I got some more work done - and had a bat in the house! I decided to use two browns around the edge - one of them looks dark red but - its brown. I think I like it. I really like the way the seams look. I know for sure about that part. I dont know if my piecing has ever been this good before. Im not the best cutter so that is great growth for me, too. Part of the entire learning process for me is seeing that I can create what I think are very cool art quilts that are also functional pieces --- but that creative part forces me to do things with quilting that other quilters would never really do -- like raw edge applique with a straight stitch with no fusing. When I sit down and try to do basic quilting things like line up seams and cut accurate pieces - I cant do that well at all. Im surprised at what my quilts look like when I try to do that type of accurate cutting and piecing. I like the results but, there is no doubt they are basic historic ish looki...

Piecing?!

I am torn about what I want to do and made this video about my process on working it out.

Another strip quilt - !

Image
I am in love with strip quilts all of a sudden! I finally got the "pebble" free motion quilting motif down! I worked on it for a long time b-4 i figured out a way for me to do it so I liked it.

Strip quilt -

I love this style quilt - I have so much fabric in my house that needs to get sewn that Ima go nuts for this style for a bit. I already have the pieces cut for the next one. Here is a larger pic - but, taken with a flash so there is a bit of wash-out. The size of this quilt is a  generous Queen - it will have about a 10 inch drop on each side and the bottom. I had not used lots of prints in my other quilts - I need more pratice on how to use a mix of solid, print and graded colors. I really like the solid color quilts I make - but, I love prints and want to use more of them.

Fabrics pulled for a new quilt

Image
I pulled a pile of fabrics for a new quilt. Ive got - prints, solids, florals in red, green, blue and brown. Ive also got touches of yellow. Ive also got some angles and curves. I have no idea what kind or style of quilt I want to make. I did sew together some old sheets to make a queen size foundation piece. I DO know Im going to be making an applique quilt.

Recycled fabrics and Bed Bugs !?

Image
I love sewing with my recycled fabrics! Where can cheap old fabric be found? How do I make sure I dont bring home bed bugs? I find fabrics on the street (in bins and bags), at resale shops, friends drop off clothes, people catch up with me on facebook to give me scraps....  used fabric is everywhere! There are free clothes on craigslist sometimes, too. Most resale shops that are not for profit will have days where a certain color is 1/2 price. I shop on those days or, for those colors. I buy prints, solids, and stripes and patterns. I buy brights and whites and everything else. I havent had good luck finding recycled fabric quilters online that seem legit. Maybe, I just dont like that say words like "scrappy" and "wonky". I dont like "whimsy", either. Dont get me started with "upcycle." That quilt is made from a red sheet and a while sheet. There is an old blanket in the middle and a sheet on the back. Guess what else? Used ...

even my closet is behind a closet

all my drag is in this closet. i just bought all that yellow and green fabric for a quilt ive got in mind.

raw edge applique quilt

Image
this is a raw edge applique quilt. i cut out blocks of tee shirt fabric, in any size. big, small, medium. and used a blanket stitch to sew random blocks down to the foundation (a thin old sheet.) the best thing about using an old sheet as foundation is.. the quilt will come out a perfect size.

quilt over a quilt?

Image
ive made some nasty quilts. i feel like im ready to sew a new quilt right over the old ones that suck. i want to just make new tops and cut off old bindings and sew the new tops on and put on new bindings. my quilts will end up like dig sites in the future. or, the thing that never will dry and molds. if i quilted a new top over an already made quilt that would be a heavy ass quilt! i love heavy quilts. i started a jeans quilt tonight -- but, its not boring because the jeans are all jeans that a painter tossed out. so, they have all this paint stuck on everywhere. pretty cool looking. maybe ive got a new front for this ugly ass quilt! i made this b-4 i ever heard of the gees bend quilters, it was one of the first quilts i ever made.

red stripe

Image
i made this quilt from old red and white sheets. it has a blanket on the inside - and another old sheet on the back. its channel quilted in narrow lines. usually when i channel quilt i will use a longer stitch and quilt as thin or thick lines as i please. a nice part about using old blankets a batting is ... you dont have to worry about them falling apart in the quilt the way that batting that is new will fall apart if its not quilted to death. think about how cheap polyester comforters get balls of batting in them.. i did not measure or worry about stripe size, i just tore apart the white and red sheet then used a small stitch to sew the stipes together. easy.
